Applied researchers work closely with customers to build evals, identify model weaknesses, and curate post-training data to address these weaknesses. This role is ideal for researchers and engineers seeking commercial engagement, project leadership, and a founder-like experience within Proximal.
Responsibilities
- Experiment with new training data to improve targeted model capabilities and post-train models to demonstrate improvements.
- Analyze frontier model performance on internal tasks to identify weaknesses and communicate them to customers.
- Own projects end-to-end by specifying requirements with customers and coordinating internal teams to meet these requirements.
Requirements
- Strong technical and engineering abilities; good engineering judgment is valued over formal research experience.
- Creative problem solver with strong experimental instincts, thriving on ambiguous, open-ended problems.
- Strong research judgment; ability to identify promising directions, design rigorous experiments, and draw useful conclusions from messy results.
- Self-directed and relentless, taking ownership of problems end-to-end without heavy process or oversight.
