About the Role
Basis is seeking a Controller to establish financial systems and operational foundations for growth. This role involves owning accounting integrity and providing timely financial insights. The unique aspect of this position is the opportunity to automate accounting processes using AI, making the finance function a model for the company's future.
Responsibilities
- Own the integrity of accounting.
- Develop a clear, timely understanding of company earnings and spending.
- Redesign workflows across close, reconciliations, spend monitoring, and reporting.
- Determine where AI can own work and where human review is necessary.
- Ensure systems remain explainable and auditable as they scale.
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering teams.
- Translate messy processes into clear workflows, reliable data, thoughtful controls, and scalable operating rhythms.
- Design systems, implement them, review details, and perform work as needed.
- Build systems for accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting.
- Explain financial changes, their causes, and recommend business actions.
- Partner effectively with technical and nontechnical teams, including Engineering, Product, Sales, People, and company leadership.
- Ensure leadership receives accurate, timely financial information and trusts the underlying data.
- Automate the monthly close process, making it faster and more efficient.
- Provide clear visibility into spend by vendor, team, category, product, customer, and cost driver.
- Establish clear ownership, approval paths, and guardrails for purchasing and commitments.
- Ensure commercial agreements flow cleanly into billing, collections, revenue recognition, and reporting.
- Improve accounting workflows, integrations, controls, and data with scale.
- Maintain organized financial records, policies, supporting documentation, tax matters, and controls for external scrutiny.
Requirements
- 6-12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Meaningful ownership of accounting operations at a high-growth company.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge across financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, capitalization, equity, and other areas relevant to a fast-growing AI company.
- A systems mindset: ability to translate messy processes into clear workflows, reliable data, thoughtful controls, and scalable operating rhythms.
- Comfortable designing the system, implementing it, reviewing the details, and doing the work yourself when needed.
- Experience building systems for accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting.
- Strong analytical judgment and the ability to explain not only what changed financially, but why it changed and what the business should do about it.
- Ability to partner effectively with technical and nontechnical teams, including Engineering, Product, Sales, People, and company leadership.
