About the Role
This role owns the safety-relevant scenarios we validate against. You will define what makes a scenario safety-relevant, build the catalog, and own the argument that it is sufficient. The catalog draws from log-based scenarios from real events and NCAP-based scenarios from consumer test protocols. You will own both and how they fit together into one coverage argument. This is a technical individual contributor role where you will build pipelines and write analysis yourself.
Responsibilities
- Define scenario taxonomy and criteria for safety relevance and criticality.
- Build pipelines to extract safety-relevant events from fleet data into reusable scenarios.
- Own the implementation and upkeep of standardized crash-avoidance protocol suites.
- Define scenario execution methods and evidence production.
- Own the regression suite to prevent known failures from recurring.
- Integrate triggering conditions and hazards from functional safety and safety operations.
- Utilize and shape AI tooling for safety analysis, scenario mining, categorization, and documentation.
- Build custom tooling for extraction, coverage analysis, and reporting.
- Understand the legitimate use and limitations of AI assistance in validation.
- Reason about the limits of evidence, including simulation fidelity and distribution shift.
Requirements
- 6+ years in safety validation, verification, or test engineering for automated vehicles, ADAS, or another safety-critical domain with deep hands-on experience.
- Demonstrated ownership of scenario-based validation on a real program, including building or shaping a scenario catalog and defending its sufficiency.
- Hands-on experience with crash-avoidance protocols (e.g., Euro NCAP, US NCAP) and judgment to adapt them.
- Strong data ability, including querying vehicle log data, building extraction and clustering pipelines, and forming defensible positions.
- Proficiency in Python and comfortable with statistics of exposure, rare events, and coverage.
- Hands-on experience with ASAM OpenSCENARIO and OpenDRIVE.
- Understanding of ISO 21448 (SOTIF) and ISO 34502.
- Familiarity with SAE J3016.
- Simulation experience with an informed view of its credibility.
- Clear written communication skills for coverage arguments.
- Experience with falsification, adversarial scenario search, or criticality-driven parameter sampling (Nice to have).
- Experience contributing scenario-based evidence to a safety case defended to an external party (Nice to have).
- Background in traffic safety research, crash data analysis, or naturalistic driving studies (Nice to have).
- Experience building validation infrastructure (Nice to have).
