About the Role
This role owns the operational safety discipline, managing incidents, training personnel, triaging field events, and driving investigations to engineering changes. The goal is to create a scalable, coherent system for operational safety as the company grows.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end incident response process, including detection, notification, severity classification, coordination, containment, root cause investigation, and closure.
- Establish authority for operations and ensure it is exercised appropriately.
- Build a pipeline to convert field telemetry, disengagements, operator reports, and near-miss data into a prioritized, actionable queue.
- Define the taxonomy and severity model for events.
- Own and make visible triage rate, backlog, and time-to-disposition metrics to engineering and leadership.
- Lead investigations of collisions, disengagements, and anomalous behavior, driving to defensible causal accounts.
- Track corrective actions through to verified closure.
- Design the training and recurrent-qualification program for safety drivers, autonomous vehicle operators, and remote support staff.
- Own the curriculum, practical evaluation, and qualification records for training programs.
- Own the operational safety metrics set and reporting cadence.
- Ensure internal safety records can withstand external scrutiny.
- Act as the channel for field reality to inform the product.
- Partner with the Head of Safety to ensure operational evidence feeds hazard analysis and change assessment.
Requirements
- 8+ years in safety operations, fleet safety, transportation safety, or operational risk in a safety-critical domain (commercial trucking, autonomous vehicles, rail, aviation, or industrial operations).
- Direct AV or commercial fleet experience is a strong plus.
- Demonstrated experience leading real incident investigations to root cause and driving corrective actions to closure.
- Fluency with structured investigation and risk methods (root cause analysis, causal factor charting, human factors analysis, hazard identification).
- Experience designing training for operational staff, including practical evaluation and qualification decisions.
- Comfortable working directly with event data: querying it, building own views, and forming defensible positions.
- SQL and basic scripting skills are expected.
- Working knowledge of the US vehicle regulatory environment (NHTSA Standing General Order, FMCSA regulations, hours of service).
- Familiarity with SAE J3016 levels and ODD concepts.
- Calm under a live incident, rigorous, and willing to make difficult decisions.
- Willingness to be on-site and on-call.
