About the Role
The Design Engineer will support the preconstruction design delivery of the project, coordinating with the Design Manager. This role involves understanding Design-Build and P3 project structures, contracts, standards, construction, designers, and deliverables. During construction, the Design Engineer will manage RFIs, minor work changes, field design changes, and construction submittals.
Responsibilities
- Support the Contractor team in interactions with the Letting Authority, partners, and designer, focusing on risk and deliverables, and follow up on action items.
- Participate in the design process across various phases, from proposal to construction, to provide optimal technical solutions that minimize quantities and/or construction time while meeting all technical requirements.
- Perform due diligence and review designs from sub-consultants and clients, conducting quality control reviews and independent analyses.
- Assist in monitoring design progress against the schedule and approve tasks to ensure deadlines are met.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks and develop design strategies to protect the partnership team.
- Collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment, communicating with estimating and construction teams to identify needs and evaluate solutions.
- Initiate, coordinate, and perform design projects and calculations as needed.
- Review and propose revisions to technical provisions and design requirements.
- Develop or evaluate plans, criteria, or special analyses for the design effort.
- Participate in meetings with owners, developers, partners, and consultants.
- Produce periodic reports, presentations, and synopses as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
- 3-6 years of related work experience.
- Experience with Design-Build or Public-Private Partnership projects.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
- Strong work ethic and integrity.
- Dedication to continual learning and problem-solving.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and construction partners.
- Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, and DOT standards.
- Familiarity with CAD.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods.
- Requires driving occasionally for up to 2-5 hours.
- Requires working in outdoor weather conditions.
- Minimum physical exertion such as walking, lifting, standing for long periods, bending, or reaching may be required.
- Requires visual ability to perform tasks: preparing and analyzing data, plans, drawings, outlines, viewing a computer, and extensive reading.
- Requires the ability to physically operate standard office equipment (laptop, phone, keyboard, mouse, etc.).
