About the Role
This role owns the mechanical heart of the actuator program, focusing on transmissions, structures, and thermal design to determine the strength, precision, quietness, and durability of robot joints.
Responsibilities
- Design planetary, harmonic, and cycloidal transmission stages, focusing on torque density, stiffness, backlash, efficiency, and noise.
- Collaborate with Mechanical and Hardware teams on motor integration, including magnetic and thermal interactions and long-term encoder calibration.
- Design actuator packages, considering structural integrity, bearings, sealing, and thermal/load paths.
- Define and execute life testing protocols, including cycle tests, load spectra analysis, teardown analysis, and setting design margins.
- Design for in-house subassembly, calibration, and testing of actuators.
- Drive the actuator performance envelope in collaboration with controls, firmware, and mechanical teams.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience designing actuators or precision transmissions, or equivalent research experience, for products that have shipped.
- In-depth knowledge of geartrain design, material and part selection, manufacturing methods, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
- Strong mechanical fundamentals including bearings and preload, shaft and housing design, tolerance stack-ups, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), fatigue, and thermal design.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), FEA with sound judgment, and performing hand calculations.
- Experience designing, instrumenting, and iterating on designs based on life test results and teardown analysis.
