About the Role
Cognition is seeking an exceptional operator to design and build an AI-native legal function for an AI-native company. This role involves creating new operating models, integrating AI and automation, and ensuring the legal team supports rapid growth efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Design and continuously improve the operating model for Legal.
- Identify work that should be handled by lawyers, automated, or eliminated.
- Build intelligent intake, triage, workflow, and knowledge systems.
- Work with technical teams to experiment with Devin, AI agents, and other tools to transform legal work.
- Build systems that make it easy for internal teams to get legal answers quickly.
- Work with Sales, Product, Engineering, Security, Finance, People, Communications, and other teams to identify and remove friction.
- Create scalable processes without creating bureaucracy.
- Measure speed, outcomes, recurring friction, outside spend, and team time to drive improvements.
- Own the technology strategy for the Legal team, including contracting, knowledge management, matter management, e-billing, and entity management.
- Determine the best solution (software, AI, automation, process change, or elimination) for legal problems.
- Build and deploy AI-enabled workflows to increase the leverage of the Legal team.
- Own the Legal team's budget, outside counsel relationships, vendors, technology, and operational planning.
- Develop a strategy for using outside counsel versus internal expertise.
- Negotiate fees and alternative arrangements with external lawyers.
- Build simple, useful operating rhythms and dashboards for workload, spending, and performance.
- Help build a Legal team with high ownership, business understanding, judgment, problem-solving, and technology utilization.
- Instill principles of ownership, business understanding, judgment, problem-solving, and technology use into the team's operating culture.
Requirements
- Unusually strong operator comfortable with strategy and execution.
- Significant experience in legal operations, business operations, or a similar role making complex organizations work better.
- Experience inside a rapidly growing technology company is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of running a sophisticated legal function (budgets, outside counsel, legal technology, contracting systems, planning, metrics).
- Deep curiosity about AI and its impact on professional work.
- Excellent judgment and a bias toward action.
- Ability to take an ambiguous problem, identify key issues, and drive to resolution.
- Clear communication skills, low ego, and ability to work with engineers and executives.
- A builder's instinct to fix broken processes.
- JD, MBA, or equivalent experience can be helpful, but demonstrated building skills and thinking are more important.
