About the Role
Spear AI is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to contribute to the development of their maritime domain awareness platform. This role involves working across branding, marketing, product development, and the internal design system, with direct collaboration with leadership and influence on technical direction.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement complex, data-rich product surfaces on Horizon, our maritime acoustic data platform, from first sketch to production.
- Identify opportunities to redesign or refine key features, flows, and address smaller quality issues.
- Participate in kickoffs, understand the product and audience, and propose design solutions.
- Champion performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA), and maintainability as core considerations.
- Set standards through design reviews and mentorship, conducting design audits and pull request reviews.
- Contribute to the scaling strategy of Design Engineering at Spear AI.
Requirements
- 7+ years of design engineering experience, with a focus on design/front-end development.
- Demonstrated experience operating at a senior individual contributor level on a high-bar team.
- Deep understanding of design workflows and their technical constraints.
- Meticulous attention to detail in animation, loading states, typography, accessibility, responsiveness, and performance.
- Substantial experience shaping or maintaining a design system at scale, including component API design, token architecture, and accessibility primitives.
- Courage to ask questions, experiment, and advocate for design decisions.
- Experience mentoring designers and/or frontend engineers, establishing patterns, and improving team capabilities through reviews and work.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments with shifting priorities.
- A collaborative mindset, checking ego at the door, giving and receiving honest feedback, and treating teammates' wins as one's own.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building design systems/component libraries used by other engineering teams.
- A solid background in Product/UI Design with a strong sense of layout, color theory, typography, and visual hierarchy.
- Fluency in Figma, including advanced features like variables, modes, auto layout, and component architecture that mirrors code.
- Comfort designing data-dense interfaces such as tables, charts, dashboards, and real-time displays.
Skills
- Expertise with Tailwind CSS
- Deep understanding of modern CSS fundamentals and layouts (container queries, cascade, specificity, OKLCH, view transitions, flex, grid, etc.)
- Strong grasp of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2)
- Strong grasp of performance metrics (Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse)
- Experience with frontend technologies like React, Next.js, and TypeScript
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Geospatial / mapping experience (Mapbox, MapLibre, deck.gl, Cesium) (Bonus)
- Experience shipping in regulated or secure environments (defense, finance, healthcare) (Bonus)
