About the Role

The Director Community Development Underwriting oversees loan underwriting functions, managing the full lifecycle of new originations and guiding restructuring and workout analysis for existing borrowers. This role reports to the Head of Small Business and Community Development Credit and manages a team of commercial underwriters to support Community Development Lending (CDL) originations and existing borrowers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of underwriters to analyze complex transactions, ensuring eligibility and conformance with credit guidelines.
  • Exercise sound judgment in evaluating transaction structures, risk/return, policy exceptions, and creditworthiness.
  • Recommend strategies and guidance on risk mitigants, covenants, and structural guidance.
  • Serve as the primary interface for underwriting processes, providing recommendations and technical structuring guidance.
  • Provide input to strategic and tactical planning for CDL Origination and Credit/Risk teams.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to recommend and conduct training on key topics.
  • Conduct regular 1:1 meetings with direct reports, managing staff development, coaching, and performance.
  • Oversee hiring and provide input on staffing needs for workforce development.
  • Partner with portfolio and special assets teams to improve handoffs, coordination, and alignment on policies.
  • Represent underwriting functions in meetings with CDL originations and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure good communication and information sharing within the CDL loan origination team and with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external partners like CDFIs on industry updates and best practices.
  • Ensure the quality of underwriting work products, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and recommending strategies to minimize risks.
  • Deliver technical support and oversee financial analysis for existing and distressed borrowers.
  • Review post-closing amendment memos to ensure thorough underwriting.
  • Challenge assumptions and identify emerging risks in underwriting analyses and financial projections.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver technical underwriting guidance and recommend strategies to improve borrower performance.
  • Maintain compliance with credit and underwriting guidelines and policies.
  • Apply experience with distressed credits to new originations, identifying potential risks and recommending mitigants.
  • Use portfolio performance data to identify underwriting trends and incorporate lessons learned into guidelines.
  • Attend special assets and portfolio risk meetings, providing technical guidance.
  • Oversee the underwriting checklist to ensure tasks are completed and loans are managed according to guidelines.
  • Review credit memos and analysis to ensure thorough underwriting.
  • Provide underwriting support and backup as a reviewer and co-approver for credit and amendment memos.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulatory changes, and internal policies.
  • Partner with technology and operations excellence teams to improve processes and system design.
  • Assign and manage team workload for new originations and existing borrowers.
  • Provide guidance on templates, forms, and documents that capture underwriting requirements.
  • Ensure the team meets service level agreements and deadlines for loan closings.
  • Update and maintain underwriting guidelines for approval.
  • Support credit and risk with special projects, identifying emerging risks and process gaps.
  • Provide input on credit guidelines and other policies and procedures.
  • Support the Head of Small Business and Community Development with other functions.
  • Leverage workload management tools for coaching on production and quality metrics.
  • Provide input for developing new lending products and drafting guidelines.
  • Understand and support data integrity in accordance with organizational policies.

Requirements

  • 10 years of advanced commercial and community development lending underwriting and/or lending experience.
  • Experience with cash flow analysis, sensitivity analysis, stress testing, leverage and liquidity analysis, collateral and guarantor evaluation, risk ratings, debt service capacity assessment, collateral valuation, loan structuring, and risk mitigations.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising credit judgment and making or presenting recommendations on complex transactions, policy exceptions, restructuring, and significant amendments/modifications.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of prior leadership experience managing direct reports.
  • Strong underwriting, credit risk management, and impact area expertise.
