About the Role
We are hiring a Director of Vehicle Integration to lead the group responsible for developing and testing our vehicle platforms. This role oversees hardware-in-the-loop and bench capabilities for autonomy software validation, vehicle commissioning, and serves as an engineering backstop for field issues. The position requires a player-coach approach, leading senior engineers and technicians while driving the creation and filling of new roles.
Responsibilities
- Own off-vehicle validation, including hardware-in-the-loop and bench capabilities that validate software releases against real vehicle interfaces.
- Build modular systems for harness breakouts, power, sensor interfaces, and logging paths to facilitate reuse in later configurations.
- Own the autonomy integration on the development fleet, covering electrical architecture, harnesses, mounting, sensor and compute placement, power, and drive-by-wire/actuation interfaces.
- Manage fault handling and degraded-mode behavior for vehicle integration.
- Oversee on-vehicle bring-up and commissioning, including build instructions, drawings, calibration procedures, and production scripts.
- Ensure commissioning is a critical gate for vehicle readiness.
- Collaborate with robotics on release interfaces, vehicle operations on availability and field issues, hardware engineering and manufacturing on build/retrofit execution, and OEM/supplier partners.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- 3+ years of relevant experience, including 3+ years leading engineers.
- Demonstrated ownership of vehicle integration from architecture through fleet deployment, with accountability for system installation, validation, and support.
- Hands-on experience with vehicle networks (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet).
- Hands-on experience with drive-by-wire and actuation integration.
- Hands-on experience with electrical and harness architecture.
- Hands-on experience with embedded compute and sensor integration.
- Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop and bench validation.
- Experience converting bespoke vehicle bring-up engineering into a repeatable process with clear documentation.
- Experience on an L3 or L4 automated driving program, or a production ADAS program at L2+.
- Ability to work onsite five days a week in San Francisco.
- Ability to travel to test and deployment sites.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work at roof level and under vehicles, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
