About the Role

Ontario County seeks a qualified and experienced attorney to serve as the full-time County Attorney. This role provides legal counsel to the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, and County departments. The County Attorney's Office handles civil actions, juvenile delinquency prosecution, social services matters, contract review, risk management, labor relations, and policy development. The position involves supervising a staff of 18 attorneys, paralegals, and support staff. The incumbent will shadow the current County Attorney before her retirement in early 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as legal advisor to the board of supervisors and county officers on matters involving official acts of a civil nature.
  • Prosecute and defend all civil actions and proceedings brought by or against the county, its board of supervisors, or any county officer in their official capacity.
  • Formulate and assist in the implementation of county-wide policies as requested or required by regulations.
  • Employ attorneys and staff to provide counsel or assistance in civil actions or proceedings and to fulfill the duties of the Office.
  • Interpret Federal, State, and local regulations and advise the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, and other officers.
  • Review and approve related administrative expenses.
  • Supervise the staff assigned to the department (currently 18 attorneys, paralegals, and support staff).
  • Review and assist in collaborative interactions with other agencies.
  • Prepare written legal memorandums and opinions as requested.
  • Provide counsel to various department heads and county agencies on a variety of topics.

Requirements

  • Must meet the qualifications for the County Attorney position at the time of appointment.
  • Must be admitted to practice law in the State of New York.
  • Shall hold no other public or political office.
  • Shall devote full working time to Ontario County.
  • Must be a resident of Ontario County at the time of appointment.

Experience Level

  • At least 10 years of satisfactory full-time paid legal experience in a government or public sector agency required.
  • At least three years of management or supervision of personnel is preferred.

Education Level

  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate Degree.
  • Admitted to the New York State Bar and licensed in good standing to practice law in NYS.

Salary/Compensations

  • 2026 Starting Salary: $176,805/year
  • 2027 Starting Salary: $183,877
