About the Role
Your mission is to keep our users safe by building technical safeguards into the platform and API, developing product features for user protection, and collaborating with the Community Management team. You will prioritize security, anticipate potential attacks, and design user-facing features that enhance safety.
Responsibilities
- Build safety into the platform by designing and implementing technical safeguards in our API and backend, including abuse detection, rate limiting, verification checks, and signals for detecting fake accounts and scams.
- Ship user-facing safety features such as reporting flows, warnings on suspicious messages, blocking and privacy controls, and safer default settings.
- Threat-model new features before they ship to identify and mitigate potential abuse by bad actors.
- Stay current on evolving attacks against social platforms and lead response efforts during security incidents.
- Decide on building in-house solutions versus purchasing and integrating third-party tools for security problems.
- Collaborate with Community Management to build tooling and standards for moderation, ensuring efficient handling of high-risk cases.
- Translate moderation learnings into product and platform improvements, and leverage platform signals for better moderation decisions.
- Own platform-side obligations under the Digital Services Act and GDPR, including notice and action, statements of reason, complaint mechanisms, and transparency reporting.
- Maintain audit-ready evidence for compliance requirements.
- Measure safety metrics honestly, including harm reaching users, response speed, and decision accuracy.
- Direct and review AI-generated code for production quality.
Requirements
- Several years of experience building and operating production web platforms, ideally with a focus on trust & safety, anti-abuse, fraud prevention, or application security.
- Solid Ruby on Rails experience in production, or clear evidence of quickly and effectively learning a new language and its ecosystem.
- Strong SQL skills and a deep understanding of database behavior to identify abuse patterns in data.
- Firm grasp of client-server architecture, understanding client trust limitations, risk locations, and API failure modes under attack.
- Infrastructure fluency in AWS, logging, observability, and queues, with the ability to reason about systems under attack.
- A security-first mindset, including instinctive threat modeling, probing feature abuse potential, and staying updated on social network attack vectors.
- A user- and product-centric view, caring about the user experience of safety features and comfortable shipping or shaping frontend features (React and TypeScript).
- Ability to work effectively with non-engineers (moderators, product, legal), explaining technical risks clearly and integrating moderation insights into code.
- Judgment under pressure, balancing user safety and freedom, and making quick decisions when users may be at risk.
- Deliberate use of AI as leverage, directing and reviewing generated code for production quality.
- Excellent English skills for international team collaboration.
- Hands-on experience with a fraud, scam, or impersonation wave at scale (a plus).
- Experience selecting and integrating vendor tooling in a safety or security stack (a plus).
- A security background in threat modeling, incident response, or offensive security (a plus).
- German language and German-market moderation context (a plus).
