About the Role
The Lead Plant Engineer is the plant engineering representative for all projects, controlling technical execution from launch through closeout. This role defines plant solutions and tools, supporting proposal tenders and project execution.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate all technical aspects of substations and balance of plant for large and HV substation projects.
- Identify key internal & external stakeholders and their needs, driving effective communication.
- Manage engineering activities including schedule development, design safety, planning design reviews, design optimization, On Time Delivery, risk management, and quality control/assurance.
- Interface with internal and external team members.
- Prepare and deliver concept and detail design for power single line drawings, physical substation layouts, equipment erection drawings, construction details, and various layouts for high voltage equipment and control buildings.
- Produce optimized outdoor and indoor general arrangements for substations.
- Produce and deliver technical specifications and data sheets for major HV equipment.
- Oversee related studies and calculations, and develop bills of material.
- Manage project BOM & MDL, write/review High Voltage equipment technical specifications, and support sourcing for vendor quotations.
- Serve as the single point of contact for technical issues for the customer and project manager.
- Manage technical change control and risk management.
- Respond to site RFI and conduct field inspections.
- Meet customer engineering CTQ's.
- Support proposals and tenders for HVDC or substation projects, including estimating man hours and equipment application.
- Complete similar HV S/S design projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college (BSEE strongly preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering for electric utilities and renewable energy power plants.
- Experience as an Electrical Project Engineer in substation type applications, including primary (outdoor) substation design and required studies.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%.
Skills
- High Voltage substation North American standards & guidelines (IEEE & ANSI standards and codes such as the NEC and the NESC.)
- Local Grid Codes
- GE GIS equipment
- Design aspects for HV/MV equipment including reactors, capacitors, transformers, Breakers, Disconnect switches, BOP, etc.
- Contract and project management
- Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), or Engineering equipment package (EEP) project execution.
- Civil engineering and substation related structural design requirements.
- Applicable design calculations for primary & secondary equipment
- Field-testing and commissioning experience
- Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capability
- Problem-solving abilities
- Capacity to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Personal computer skills, including programming and design automation
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, BIM and Revit
