About the Role
The Candidate Assessment Division is responsible for overseeing the character investigation, physical agility testing, medical screening, and psychological testing of candidates seeking uniformed and civilian employment with the New York City Police Department. Under general supervision, the candidate will perform professional work in the field of psychology, conducting psychological testing and interviews to evaluate individuals' emotional and intellectual functioning. The role involves preparing psychologist findings and maintaining records.
Responsibilities
- Conduct psychological testing and interviews.
- Evaluate individuals' emotional and intellectual functioning through the selection, administration, and interpretation of standard group and individual tests of personality development and intellectual capacity.
- Prepare psychologist findings.
- Maintain suitable records and files of test performance results.
Requirements
- Completion of two years of graduate work (at least 60 graduate semester credits) in psychology, in an accredited graduate program leading to a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, forensic psychology, clinical health psychology or neuro-psychology.
- Two years of satisfactory full-time experience, gained after admission to the accredited graduate program, in one of these areas under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist in a hospital, penal institution, social services agency, clinic, court, school or other agency or institution.
- A doctorate in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, forensic psychology, clinical health psychology or neuro-psychology from an accredited college or university.
- Completion of a re-specialization in clinical psychology from an accredited graduate program plus one year of satisfactory full-time experience as described above.
- Completion of the equivalent of three semester credits from an accredited graduate school in each of the following: personality testing, individual intelligence testing, psychopathology or abnormal psychology, and psychological and/or behavioral intervention.
- 240 hours of experience, under the supervision of a licensed psychologist, in each of the following: personality testing, individual intelligence testing, and psychological and/or behavioral intervention.
- Experience in psychological and/or behavioral intervention may be under the supervision of a licensed psychiatrist.
- Completion of an American Psychological Association (APA) approved doctoral program in professional psychology is evidence of meeting course requirements.
- Completion of an APA approved internship in professional psychology is evidence of meeting one year of supervised full-time experience.
- Externships are part of a doctoral program and will not be accepted for meeting minimum experience requirements.
- Experience gained prior to admission into the required graduate program will also not be accepted for meeting minimum experience requirements.
- For assignment to Assignment Level I: A valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education must be maintained for the duration of employment for certain departments.
- For assignment to Assignment Level II: A doctoral degree in psychology as described above, and one additional year of satisfactory full-time experience (either working as a Psychologist for the City of New York, or in a supervisory capacity in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, forensic psychology, clinical health psychology or neuro-psychology in an approved agency or institution). Employees completing their doctoral degree requirements on or after October 1, 1992, must have at least one year of qualifying experience gained after the completion of all doctoral degree requirements.
- For assignment to Assignment Level II: A valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education (required for certain departments upon appointment, or within one year of assignment for others, with possible extension). This license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
- For assignment to Assignment Level III: A doctoral degree in psychology as described under Assignment Level II, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education, and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, forensic psychology, clinical health psychology or neuro-psychology, of which at least one year must have been under the direct supervision of a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist, and at least three years must have been in a supervisory capacity as a licensed Psychologist.
- For assignment to Assignment Level III: A valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
