About the Role

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges manages over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring public safety and mobility. Team members work on major project designs, oversee construction and maintenance, and perform engineering reviews on complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Assign and coordinate activities of in-house crews for repairs to the city's elevated infrastructure.
• Review engineering plans in preparation for repair jobs.
• Prepare work tickets and lane closure applications.
• Draft U.S. Coast Guard notices of upcoming work.
• Coordinate with skilled trades to solve logistical problems and ensure safety standards.
• Monitor daily project progress and confirm material usage per industry standards.
• Prepare project reports including material and personnel costs.
• Respond to emergencies and supervise work during evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Perform other related duties.

Requirements

• Must be serving permanently in the title or reachable on the open-competitive list.
• Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to drive a city-owned vehicle.
• A four-year high school diploma or equivalent, and five years of experience managing/inspecting construction projects with a total cost of at least $300,000 per year.
• One year of experience as described above and a baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, architectural technology, landscape architecture, construction, construction technology, or construction management.
• One year of experience as described above and a valid professional engineer, registered architect, or registered landscape architect license.
• A four-year high school diploma or equivalent, and a combination of at least two years of experience and education as described above to equal a total of five years.
• Matriculation in an undergraduate college degree program may substitute for experience at a rate of 30 semester credits for one year of experience, up to a maximum of three years.
• Candidates must specify for each construction project: description, time period, type of work performed, and project budget.
• Must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment.
• License must be maintained for the duration of employment.
• Moving violations, license suspension, or accident record may lead to disqualification.
• For Assignment to Level II: One additional year of experience in Assignment Level I or equivalent experience.
• For Assignment to Level III: Two additional years of experience in Construction Project Manager Assignment Level I and II or equivalent experience, and a valid NY State driver license.
