About the Role
Sciemo is seeking a Data Architect to design and own the data platform that powers our AI products. This senior, founding-level role involves making critical architectural decisions regarding schema, storage, compute, data contracts, and governance to ensure rapid development and responsible data handling.
Responsibilities
- Design and own the end-to-end data architecture, including ingestion, storage, transformation, and serving across multiple cloud environments.
- Define data models and semantic layers for analytical workloads and production ML/agent systems.
- Establish data contracts and interface standards between different layers of the system.
- Evaluate and select appropriate platform components based on capability, cost, and operational requirements.
- Build and operate scalable ingestion and transformation pipelines for diverse data sources.
- Implement orchestration and versioning practices for reproducible and debuggable pipelines.
- Instrument data quality, lineage, freshness, and observability to proactively identify issues.
- Design solutions for graph and relationship-heavy workloads alongside conventional tabular data.
- Establish standards for data security, access control, retention, and privacy.
- Build tooling and documentation to promote correct data usage.
- Partner with engineering and customer-facing teams for safe and efficient onboarding of new customer data.
- Set technical standards and best practices for data at Sciemo.
- Mentor engineers as the team grows.
- Translate business and product requirements into architectural decisions with clear tradeoffs.
- Stay current with the data platform landscape and adopt relevant new technologies.
Requirements
- Significant experience designing and operating production data platforms at scale.
- Deep expertise in data modeling (dimensional, normalized, semantic layer design).
- Strong SQL skills.
- Strong Python skills and production-grade engineering practices.
- Comfort with Spark or equivalent distributed compute.
- Hands-on experience with modern warehouse/lakehouse platforms.
- Hands-on experience with orchestration/transformation tooling (Airflow, dbt, Dagster, ZenML, Kedro, etc.).
- Experience supporting ML and AI workloads (feature availability, training/serving consistency, retrieval patterns).
- Working knowledge of graph data models and their advantages over relational approaches.
- Practical experience with data governance, security, and privacy in a customer-data environment.
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining architectural tradeoffs to diverse stakeholders.
- Startup adaptability and a bias toward shipping.
