About the Role

The Senior Medical Technologist performs a variety of routine and special clinical laboratory examinations and procedures. This role provides data for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease or assessment of a medical condition, requiring competency in Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Possesses competency in Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for proper specimen collection, handling, and processing.
  • Adheres to quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance.
  • Follows corrective action policies when test systems are not within acceptable performance levels.
  • Identifies and addresses problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Performs proficiency testing in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs and records appropriate quality control procedures and results.
  • Reports all critical values in a timely manner and documents in the laboratory information system.
  • Ensures correct patient/specimen identification throughout the testing procedure.
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge of the assigned department and its relationship with other laboratory areas.
  • Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal or questionable.
  • Assists in complying with Joint Commission, New York State Department of Health, and Federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited school.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required.
  • Knowledge of hematology, chemistry, blood bank, and/or microbiology.
  • Hospital experience desired.
  • Must work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
  • Good oral and written communication skills essential.
