About the Role

The Chief of Branches is a high-level executive position responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and management of the San Francisco Public Library’s Branch Library Division, encompassing 27 neighborhood libraries and approximately 400 staff. This role ensures optimal resource allocation, budget management, and policy implementation across all branches, with a primary focus on community-centric leadership and developing innovative library services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and administrative management for the Branch Library Division.
  • Oversee system-wide planning, policy implementation, and innovations in collaboration with other division chiefs.
  • Manage the division’s operating budget.
  • Analyze emerging trends.
  • Direct personnel assignments.
  • Supervise the Assistant Chief of Branches, a Library Technical Assistant II, and a Junior Management Assistant.
  • Oversee major capital projects, including branch renovations and new library construction.
  • Drive community engagement and high-level stakeholder relations.
  • Represent the library to City agencies, policymakers, and community organizations.
  • Serve as the official liaison to the Council of Neighborhood Libraries.
  • Develop policy recommendations.
  • Deliver public presentations.
  • Produce critical written communications such as reports and memos.
  • Collaborate with an Assistant Chief of Branches and District Managers.
  • Engage with staff at all levels through special projects and task forces.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Four (4) years of managerial experience, including supervisory responsibilities, in a large urban library.
