About the Role
As a Data Engineer at Serval, you will be the first dedicated data hire, responsible for owning the entire data stack and building the data function for the business. You will consolidate data from various systems into a well-modeled warehouse, build pipelines, and create a self-serve layer to ensure data accessibility and trustworthiness. You will partner with stakeholders to define key metrics and build the infrastructure to track them at scale, making critical decisions on tooling and architecture.
Responsibilities
- Stand up and own our first unified data warehouse, including modeling, pipelines, data quality, and performance.
- Partner with teams across the business to translate ambiguous questions into clear requirements and metrics.
- Consolidate data from production Postgres databases and SaaS systems into a single source of truth.
- Design clean, performant data models with clear lineage, standardized nomenclature, and documentation for self-serve BI.
- Build internal data tools with applied AI, using Serval's agents to create self-serve answers for recurring data questions.
- Own data quality, governance, and security from the outset.
- Make vendor, tooling, and architecture decisions for the data stack, focusing on lean and cost-aware solutions.
- Define data engineering practices and standards for future team growth.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering and business analytics.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining data warehouses and pipelines.
- Expert SQL, including hands-on experience with PostgreSQL.
- Strong Python for pipeline development, scripting, and tooling.
- Experience standing up a modern data warehouse or lakehouse from scratch (Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable).
- Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines to transform data into usable production databases using a modern stack (e.g., Fivetran, DBT).
- Hands-on experience with AWS and infrastructure as code (Terraform) for managing cloud data infrastructure.
- Track record of owning data projects end to end and exercising sound judgment independently.
- Strong product intuition and business curiosity.
- Ability to translate business questions into clean, usable data models.
- Comfortable with the pace and ambiguity of a fast-growing startup environment.
