About the Role
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Director of Direct Audience to lead a new team focused on building community and reader relationships. This role will drive a strategy for using tools like newsletters and comments to foster habit, loyalty, and retention, aiming to deliver a world-class reader experience across various platforms and events.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a newsroom-wide strategy for direct audience engagement, prioritizing initiatives that drive loyalty, habit, and community.
- Lead and motivate a team of newsletter editors, writers, community producers, and moderators, setting high performance standards while encouraging creativity and experimentation.
- Translate goals into actionable, measurable plans to drive growth, deepen engagement, and improve subscriber retention.
- Champion an audience-first, data-driven decision-making culture, using audience feedback for continuous iteration.
- Transform the reader experience by empowering journalists in their interactions with subscribers.
- Ensure a premium and cohesive experience across all flagship and personality-led newsletters.
- Collaborate with content strategy, product, social, multimedia, and live journalism teams to extend direct relationships and community-building efforts.
- Advocate for the reader, ensuring every direct interaction delivers expected expertise and value.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in digital media with expertise in building communities and relationships between newsrooms and audiences.
- Proven talent for leading, motivating, and developing high-performing teams that drive substantial audience growth and subscriber loyalty.
- Exceptional strategic thinking with the ability to identify growth opportunities and build measurable plans.
- Experience analyzing data for decision-making and translating data into a broader narrative.
- Deep understanding of the shifting media landscape.
- Self-starter mentality, flexible, can-do attitude, and a passion for connecting with audiences.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated track record of influencing senior stakeholders.
- Ability to build trust and collaboration across multiple teams.
