About the Role

The Chief of Branches is a high-level executive position responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and management of the San Francisco Public Library’s Branch Library Division, encompassing 27 neighborhood libraries and approximately 400 staff. This role ensures optimal resource allocation, budget management, and policy implementation across all branches, with a primary focus on community-centric leadership and developing innovative library services to meet diverse neighborhood needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction and administrative management for the Branch Library Division.
  • Oversees system-wide planning, policy implementation, and innovations in collaboration with other division chiefs.
  • Carries full operational responsibility for managing the division’s operating budget.
  • Analyzes emerging trends and directs personnel assignments.
  • Provides direct supervision to the Assistant Chief of Branches, a Library Technical Assistant II, and a Junior Management Assistant.
  • Oversees major capital projects, including branch renovations and new library construction, in partnership with other executives.
  • Drives community engagement and high-level stakeholder relations.
  • Represents the library to City agencies, policymakers, and community organizations.
  • Serves as the official liaison to the Council of Neighborhood Libraries.
  • Develops policy recommendations, delivers public presentations, and produces critical written communications.
  • Collaborates with an Assistant Chief of Branches and District Managers.
  • Engages with staff at all levels through special projects and task forces.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Four (4) years of managerial experience, including supervisory responsibilities, in a large urban library system.
