About the Role

The Associated General Counsel role is a unique opportunity to join a company early and help build its legal function from the ground up. You will work directly with and report to the General Counsel as the first dedicated member of the legal team, helping to establish the legal playbook. This high-impact, high-visibility role is ideal for a versatile lawyer energized by variety, possessing a generalist's range, a builder's instinct, and strong judgment.

Responsibilities

Advise the General Counsel and executive leadership on diverse legal matters.
Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and technology contracts, including vendor, technology, partnership, customer, platform terms, NDAs, and services agreements.
Advise the business on the digital-asset regulatory landscape, partnering with compliance and outside counsel.
Support corporate, governance, and financing work, including entity management, board materials, and equity matters.
Partner on compliance, risk, and disputes, including policy development, inquiry management, and litigation oversight.
Assist the General Counsel in creating legal templates, playbooks, intake processes, and scaling the legal function.
Address a wide range of legal questions including employment, privacy, IP, and marketing, demonstrating comfort with ambiguity and a willingness to research unfamiliar areas.

Requirements

J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to a U.S. state bar in good standing.
Approximately 8–12 years of legal experience, combining law-firm foundation with in-house experience.
Demonstrated breadth across commercial contracting, regulatory/product counseling, corporate/governance, and compliance.
Exposure to digital assets, crypto, banking, or a regulated financial-services or fintech environment.
Experience working across different functions and building trust with stakeholders.
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, actionable advice to non-lawyers.
Sound, risk-adjusted judgment and analytical rigor paired with pragmatism.
High autonomy and low ego, with comfort in being resourceful and owning work end-to-end.
New York admission or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in New York is preferred.
In-house experience, particularly at an early-stage or high-growth company, is a plus.
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks for digital assets, stablecoins, money movement, or bank/financial-services activities is a plus.
U.S. bank regulatory background is a plus.
Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets is a plus.
Experience selecting or implementing legal tooling and repeatable, self-serve processes is a plus.
