About the Role
Optiver's hardware research, development, and manufacturing department in Austin builds competitive trading hardware. We are seeking an experienced hardware engineer to design and realize high-speed, high-density systems and boards, pushing the limits of possibility with novel approaches.
Responsibilities
- Design, realize, test, bring up, and manufacture custom hardware, primarily PCBs.
- Perform schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulations using tools like Spice, Ansys SiWave, and HFSS.
- Write initial bring-up code in C/Python/VHDL for the hardware.
- Interpret Eye Diagram/BERT results and correlate lab/production measurements with simulations.
- Create test plans and engineering requirements specifications.
- Debug issues as they arise.
- Research new methods to enhance system performance (latency, scale, thermals) and meet trading requirements.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of traders, researchers, software engineers (FPGA, firmware, application), mechanical engineers, and infrastructure engineers.
- Manage designs from concept through production.
- Oversee relationships with third-party vendors.
Requirements
- BS in electrical or computer engineering; Master's or Ph.D. preferred.
- 5+ years of industry experience.
- Advanced ECAD skills for schematic and layout creation in Altium, Mentor Graphics, Cadence, or equivalent.
- Proficiency in signal and power integrity (SIPI) best practices.
- End-to-end product development experience, from concept through release.
- Expertise with one or more high-speed interfaces and their protocols (e.g., PCIe Gen3-6, USB3/4, 10/25G Ethernet).
- Experience with low-speed communications in both hardware and software (e.g., I2C, SPI, JTAG, USB).
- Experience validating high-speed interfaces using TDRs, sampling, and real-time oscilloscopes.
- Ability to read and write Python.
