About the Role
South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) is seeking a passionate and energetic Sports Specialist to lead athletic activities and prepare middle school students for competitive sports events, with a primary focus on basketball. This role involves teaching fundamental skills in a variety of sports, promoting teamwork, and fostering good sportsmanship.
Responsibilities
- Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants.
- Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate sport activities and themes that support social-emotional learning competencies, build skills, and encourage team spirit.
- Facilitate purposeful activities that foster the development of new skills in youth in an engaging, creative and responsive manner.
- Plan and lead basketball practices to build individual and team skills.
- Prepare students to compete in an inter-site basketball tournament.
- Introduce and teach the fundamentals of other sports (e.g., soccer, flag football, volleyball) to enhance overall athleticism.
- Manage classroom/gym and maintain a positive learning environment.
- Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model.
- Ensure proper care of all spaces and materials, organize the room, and report any misused or damaged materials.
- Complete and submit all program reports in a timely manner, including supply requests, lesson plans, incident reports, attendance, and timesheets.
- Assist with ordering and maintaining equipment and/or supplies.
- Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or current college student preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 2 years of academic preparation in sports, or equivalent training.
- Experience coaching or playing basketball at a competitive level.
- Knowledge and understanding of youth development, after school, and public education.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people, and projects effectively.
- Experience in providing individualized and group instruction to meet the needs of youth with various skill levels.
- Experience designing and teaching courses to ensure youth success and support youth-centered learning.
- Demonstrated knowledge of teaching various sports techniques to elementary-school youth with an emphasis on skill building, recreation, and development.
- A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice.
- Comply with School Age Child Care (SACC) requirements including background check and medical clearance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth, teachers, school administrations, parents, and other staff.
- Ability to work as part of a team with the school community and other SAYA programs.
- Ability to consider situations from multiple perspectives to avoid and manage conflict.
- Comfortable adapting to changing circumstances.
- Ability to work with youth of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
