About the Role
Bring the design and production worlds together by building robots! This is a 6-month contract project with a large online retailer headquartered in Seattle, seeking a skilled Mechanical CAD Designer to join their hardware development team.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed 2D production drawings and 3D CAD models for mechanical components and assemblies used in robotic systems.
- Work closely with mechanical designers to translate 3D mechanical designs into accurate, production-ready drawings before sending parts to manufacturing.
- Use Onshape to develop, modify, and maintain accurate mechanical designs and production documentation.
- Apply GD&T tolerancing principles to ensure drawings communicate clear and manufacturable design intent.
- Apply mechanical tolerancing, fits—including clearance, transition, and interference fits—and surface finish specifications.
- Interpret engineering sketches and concepts and translate them into formal, production-ready drawings.
- Collaborate with engineers, mechanical designers, production teams, and vendors to ensure designs and documentation support fabrication and assembly requirements.
- Review CAD drawing feedback from vendors, make necessary updates and revisions, and maintain accurate documentation throughout the design-to-production process.
- Develop documentation with an understanding of common manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, and casting.
- Maintain accurate and error-free documentation while adhering to applicable ASME Y14 and/or ISO drawing standards.
- Support mechanical documentation for electromechanical assemblies and robotic systems, including complex mechanical parts with fast turnaround requirements.
- Work within revision control systems and support engineering change order (ECO) processes, incorporating continuous feedback as designs evolve.
- Create drawings and documentation appropriate for hand-built and low-volume production environments.
- Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to producing clear, accurate, and manufacturable technical documentation, with the ability to respond to drawing and dimensioning feedback within a typical 24-hour timeframe.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a mechanical drafter or similar role in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong working knowledge of GD&T principles and their practical application.
- Solid understanding of mechanical tolerancing, fits (clearance, transition, interference), and surface finish specifications.
- Ability to interpret engineering sketches and translate them into formal production drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce error-free documentation.
- Experience creating drawings for hand-built or low-volume production environments.
- Familiarity with revision control systems and engineering change order (ECO) processes.
Skills
- Proficiency in Onshape and other 3D CAD software for mechanical part and assembly modeling.
- Familiarity with ASME Y14 series and/or ISO drawing standards.
- Understanding of common manufacturing processes (CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, casting) and how they influence drawing requirements.
- Exposure to electromechanical assemblies or robotic systems.
