About the Role

The Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of patient care under the guidance of a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, RN, or LPN, performing nursing functions in accordance with established policies and ethics. This role is specifically for our LGBTQ+ Healthcare Center and requires strong cultural competency and sensitivity to the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Responsibilities

• Places patients in exam rooms and takes vital signs.
• Makes notes in the patient's medical chart.
• Assists the physician, NP, or PA as directed.
• Checks medical equipment daily and performs appropriate lab logs.
• Maintains inventories.
• Administers EKGs and other in-house testing at physician request.
• Performs phlebotomy and prepares collections for the laboratory.
• Assists with completion of lab paperwork and tracking.
• Schedules patient appointments and transportation.
• Coordinates referrals.
• Assists with grant program eligibility.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement.
• Assists with data entry for grant funding agencies.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Medical assistant certification or experience in an outpatient, private physician’s practice, or clinical setting.
• Demonstrated Phlebotomy skills gained through Medical Assistant certification education or Phlebotomy Certification.
• Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association within 3 months of hire.
• Medical terminology knowledge.
• Computer skills required (Microsoft Office) with accurate data entry.
• Must be detailed oriented with organizational skills.
• Excellent telephone and customer service skills.
• Ability to work well with other team members and departments.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion and sound judgment.
• Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance.
• Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
• Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen.
• Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
• Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
