About the Role

The IBCLC Lactation Consultant is a nursing staff member who enhances patient care in lactation and breastfeeding through education and consultation. This role serves as a direct resource to breastfeeding mothers and babies, collaborating with healthcare teams to manage lactation and breastfeeding.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proficiency in the Clinical Competencies for the Practice of an IBCLC.
• Function as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and consult with physicians and other appropriate individuals.
• Collaborate with the mother, primary nurse, physician, and health team members in the management of lactation and breastfeeding.
• Integrate knowledge, evidence-based practice, and assessment skills considering age and culture.
• Assist the primary nurse in formulating a nursing care plan for lactation and breastfeeding establishment.
• Collaborate with the health care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate lactation and breastfeeding problems.
• Develop, evaluate, and revise policies and procedures related to lactation and breastfeeding.
• Monitor and evaluate hospital practices for lactation and breastfeeding.
• Participate in Quality Improvement for regulatory compliance, patient satisfaction, lactation, and breastfeeding.
• Collaborate with OB/Ped Leadership in program development.
• Design and implement educational programs for families and the community about breastfeeding and human lactation.
• Re-evaluate needs with leadership for program development and growth.
• Assist the health care team in maintaining current knowledge and competency with breastfeeding through educational programs.
• Develop and maintain discharge support resources.
• Provide documented evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses.
• Ensure patient education and instructions are consistent with physician directives.
• Follow up with lactating mothers within Stony Brook Hospital who seek consultation.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree required.
• IBCLC Certification required.
• Registered Professional Nurse (RN) required.
• Minimum of two years of lactation consultant nursing experience required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance.
• Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
• Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen.
• Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
• Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

• $89,760 - $127,975 Base
• Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)
• Night shift differential ($15,000)
• Evening shift differential ($10,000)
• Inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential ($575)
