About the Role
Performs diversified and complex clerical duties, prioritizing assignments and organizing functions to ensure effective clerical procedures. May lead and train lower-level clerical staff. Serves as a team leader for the Bronx East switchboard/call center team, providing backup support to senior clerk referral coordinators. Handles referrals, coordination of patient transportation, issues related to insurance plans, reassignment of patients to closed physician panels, and call center related patient complaints and escalations. Also responsible for reconciling co-payments.
Responsibilities
- Answers all telephone calls in a courteous manner.
- Directs or transfers calls to appropriate persons.
- Greets patients, their families and significant others.
- Communicates appropriate information to families and significant others.
- Forwards completed charts and pre-assessment face sheets to medical records.
- Maintains log books for pre-assessment and surgery.
- Generates work order requisitions to the Engineering department.
- Performs other clerical and related duties as directed by Nursing staff.
- Coordinates registration and scheduling of patients and other related activities.
- Provides and maintains a safe environment through preventative and interventional measures.
- Ensures patient's rights are respected.
- Sets priorities, problem solves, uses proper judgment in difficult situations and is flexible.
- Actively participates, practices and promotes continuous quality improvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned and necessary for the efficient operation of the medical center.
- Integrates the standards of excellence into daily practice.
- Assigns all inpatient accommodations.
- Arranges transportation for designated patients via contractual services.
- Provides ambulance service appropriate demographic and retrieval information.
- Instructs the ambulance service on campus or hospital for patient transport.
- Contacts insurance companies and obtains authorization numbers for admission.
- Ensures authorizations are processed in a timely fashion.
- Reviews daily admission, emergency and urgent patient list.
- Ensures bed availability for a seamless flow of admission.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- 1-3 years EPIC Optime required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft® Office Word (Medium proficiency).
- Must speak and write English.
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
- Must be able to communicate information quickly and effectively.
- Must be able to work independently to enter data in scheduling system database.
- Familiarity with Office Equipment Operation: Computer, Typewriter, Fax Machine Copiers, etc.
- OHS Annual Assessment.
