About the Role
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN) with advanced clinical nursing education and certification in a distinct specialty area. NPs are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for patients within their specialty. Medical orders, progress notes, and treatment plans do not require physician countersignature.
Responsibilities
- Assesses the health status of patients/families through comprehensive health history and physical examination.
- Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations.
- Prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings, and alters the plan of care according to accepted standards and practice guidelines.
- Educates and counsels patients on health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.
- Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record.
- Consults with physicians according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria.
- Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.
- Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance interdisciplinary care delivery.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality.
- Develops the plan of care based on diagnoses and individual patient needs.
- Records, reports, and interprets client responses to the plan of care.
- Performs patient record review with a collaborating physician at least every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement.
- Completes Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required for credentialing.
- Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to Medical Staff rules and regulations and Hospital Staff bylaws.
- Supports the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and the MSHS.
- Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice.

- Serves as a resource to nurses and other health team members.

Requirements
- Ability to perform history taking.
- Ability to perform physical assessment techniques.
- Demonstrate and complete documentation of competency in specialty specific procedures according to established standards as part of initial orientation and annual performance review with collaborating physician or appropriately credentialed designee.
- Ability to interpret and apply principles of nursing research utilization.
- Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
- Work within a Collaborative Practice Agreement or Collaborative Practice Relationship Attestation as a member of the health care team in area of practice.
- Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in area of assignment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, creative problem solving, and excellent critical thinking and leadership.
- New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.
- Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration.
- Graduate of a New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
- Completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or the equivalent AND instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course).
- Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner.
- Has a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital if there is a documented work history as a Nurse Practitioner with greater than 3600 practice hours.
- Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges.
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificates as required by specialty.

Experience Level
- Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice required.
- For all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019, National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required.
- For NPs who bill for professional services, National Board Certification is required regardless of hire date.
- The Board Certification requirement may be deferred up to 1 year if approved by Chief Nursing Officer or designee.
- If less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner, a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols is required.
- If greater than 3600 practice hours, a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment is acceptable.
Education Level
- Master's degree program designed to prepare a NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patients condition that fall within their specialty area of practice or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program, i.e., post-master's NP certificate.
