About the Role

We are looking for a VP, Surety Solutions to lead and build out the surety business in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, collaborating with the Tokio Marine Canada Surety unit. Our focus is to create the best team of professionals in the business, offering excitement, challenges, and rewards for those who enjoy creating better ways to do business.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Senior Vice President and Surety Leadership Group to develop and execute strategic direction for Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
• Lead day-to-day surety operations for Ontario and Atlantic Canada, promoting consistent underwriting practices, strong execution, accountability, and effective communication.
• Provide leadership, analysis, and insight for Ontario and Atlantic Canada by monitoring the competitive landscape, optimizing risk selection, and enhancing the company's competitive position.
• Own budgeting, identify critical success factors, and ensure goals are met.
• Analyze reports to understand overall line of business performance and take strategic actions to improve results.
• Proactively work with broker partners to strengthen relationships and ensure business plans are met.
• Build and manage select broker relationships.
• Work with the surety team in building and implementing broker strategy.
• Promote the Tokio Marine Canada brand, collaborating with Commercial Insurance and ProFin business units.
• Travel to various regions regularly and participate in broker and industry events.
• Evaluate new risks through thorough analysis to determine acceptability and pricing.
• Analyze financial statements, capacity, collateral, and character of new surety opportunities.
• Analyze and review projects, approving within given authority, or recommending approval or denial of surety bonds.
• Conduct ongoing review and management of the surety portfolio, ensuring account information is current and action items are followed up.
• Work with the surety team in creating and improving systems and processes with a focus on continued efficiencies.
• Assist underwriting efforts and decision-making across the country where needed.
• Support marketing, legal, and claims services when required.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the Surety Team across Canada.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture by building trust, encouraging open dialogue, and working effectively within the surety team.
• Lead and mentor younger underwriter(s) to ensure continuous professional development and high performance.
• Perform ongoing talent management, including hiring, mentoring, training, performance management, and recognition.

Requirements

• University Bachelor’s Degree, Business or related preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in Surety, with direct people leader experience.
• Strong leadership skills to motivate, develop, and manage performance for results.
• Strong financial acumen and the ability to use data to drive decision-making.
• Extensive understanding of business, underwriting, and corporate risk management and mitigation methods.
• Ability to partner with staff within different lines of business.
• High level of organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, driving for results.
• Thought leadership and ability to innovate solutions quickly.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working closely with others and enjoying an atmosphere of cross-collaboration.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and changing environment and be comfortable with ambiguity.
• Superb customer service skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and Outlook).
• Bilingual (English/French) preferred but not required.
