About the Role
Griffin is a fully regulated UK bank powering the accounts and payments offerings of product-led fintechs. We provide the banking backbone for various industries and are expanding into card issuing, stablecoin infrastructure, and agentic finance.
Responsibilities
- Write RFCs, build proof-of-concepts, and run experiments to validate approaches.
- Care about maintainability, observability, and scalability when building software.
- Ship quality code over hitting arbitrary deadlines.
- Refactor rough edges of live systems rather than polishing what's already working.
- Write reconciliation systems that process millions of FPS transactions.
- Implement double-entry accounting that tracks card spending and settlements.
- Design webhook infrastructure with message signing and replay protection.
- Build API versioning that allows evolution without breaking customers.
- Create payment approval workflows that satisfy user experience and compliance requirements.
- Own technical decisions on projects, including RFCs, architecture, and system extension vs. rebuild.
- Manage delivery from customer problem to live feature, collaborating with PMs.
- Set technical direction through code reviews, implementation patterns, and architectural choices.
- Take production responsibility for monitoring, debugging, and improving built systems.
Requirements
- Functional programming experience (Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Scala, or Scheme) in a professional setting or substantial personal projects.
- Fintech domain expertise, including payments, accounts, ledgers, or compliance with experience in money movement, reconciliation, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong software fundamentals and distributed systems knowledge, including consistency models, idempotency, and production failure modes.
- Experience working in product-focused, collaborative teams, shaping product development alongside PMs and designers.
- Comfort with startup pace and ambiguity, adapting to shifting priorities and evolving requirements.
- Ability to complete background screening, including verification of right to work, criminal record, credit history, social media, and professional reference checks.
