About the Role

The special education teacher will plan and deliver appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in various educational settings. This role involves creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction to ensure students benefit from the general education curriculum with appropriate supports.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, adapt, and present lessons to meet individual student needs in a small-group environment.
  • Assist general education teachers in adapting lessons for students with disabilities.
  • Assess students' skills to determine needs, adapt lessons, track progress, and implement IESPs.
  • Identify at-risk students and ensure appropriate supports are in place.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior using positive behavioral support strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Discuss student progress with administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents.
  • Maintain professional competence through staff development, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.

Requirements

  • Ability to collaborate with general education teachers, school administration, and parents.
  • Ability to evaluate students accurately and objectively.
  • Ability to work with individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.
  • Knowledge of current special education practices and methodologies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of State, local, and federal regulations and policies affecting special education.

Experience Level

  • Five plus years of experience working with students with multiple disabilities, including autism spectrum, ADHD, learning disabilities, and developmental delays.

Education Level

  • Master's degree in an approved program for special education.
  • Valid Permanent, Initial, or Professional Certification from the State of New York.

Salary/Compensations

  • $255 - $261 per day
