About the Role
Undertake Fire Safety Engineering work, supporting design projects within and outside the UK. This involves consultancy-based desktop reviews of design projects in the initial stages and supporting the fire safety discipline.
Responsibilities
- Fire engineering design experience.
- Work in a range of sectors.
- Support the delivery of projects and project work within time and budget constraints.
- Collaborate and coordinate with clients, architects, project management, contractors, subcontractors, and authorities to provide practical and compliant fire engineering advice and solutions.
- Develop Fire Safety Strategy reports for new and existing buildings.
- Conduct Means of Escape analysis, including evacuation time calculations, escape route and exit width assessments, travel distance evaluations, and evacuation strategy plan development.
- Assess and understand main UK Fire Safety Regulations and Standards for buildings (e.g., Approved Document B, BS 9999, BS 7974, BS 9991, BB100, HTM 05).
- Stay updated on emerging changes in regulations and legislation.
- Assess and understand main British fire safety legislation and standards for rail projects (e.g., London Underground fire safety standards, Network Rail standards, LUL – S1371, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance, BS 9992).
- Perform risk-based interpretation and application of fire safety documents and other Codes of Practice, including international standards like NFPA.
- Conduct Third Party Reviews/Design Verification.
- Attend internal design team meetings.
- Attend external design team meetings with clients under initial supervision.
- Support the development of Fire Risk Assessment reports for building and rail sectors.
- Lead fire projects and project teams (for senior level and above).
- Assist in bidding/pursuits processes and develop fee proposals.
- Mentor, develop, support, and line manage junior staff and graduates.
Requirements
- Recent demonstrable experience in a variety of sectors and a technical fire safety engineering environment.
- Application of fire safety engineering skills within a client-focused environment.
- Confidence in working with new and existing clients and ability to build rapport and relationships.
- Robust problem-solving skills and ability to take accountability for assigned work.
- Previous experience in writing reports and presentations.
- Experience in client and internal communications and interactions.
- Experience working in a medium to large, multi-disciplinary environment.
- Membership with relevant professional institutions (e.g., IFE, CABE, RICS, IET, CIOB) or working towards membership.
