About the Role
The Senior Human Resources Generalist performs professional-level duties supporting a wide range of HR functions including performance appraisal, orientation, training, development, and compliance. This role manages employee and labor relations, actively participates in the HR team, and supports ongoing HR projects. The position requires strong interpersonal skills to interact respectfully with individuals at all levels and external vendors, balancing agency needs, business demands, and employee goodwill.
Responsibilities
- Ensure consistent interpretation and administration of Agency policies and procedures related to employee and labor relations and risk management.
- Manage labor relations and disciplinary issues by conducting investigations, counseling, and advising staff on resolution strategies.
- Advise directors, managers, and supervisors on employment law, performance management, and professional development.
- Train managers and supervisors on effective management practices, including coaching, corrective actions, communication, and grievance resolution.
- Liaise with brokers on employee benefit plan eligibility, review benefits and claims, and process related transactions.
- Manage and organize annual benefits open enrollment.
- Manage leaves of absence, including STD, LTD, maternity, paternity, medical, PFL, FMLA, and AD&D.
- Process and monitor workers’ compensation case files and follow up on open cases.
- Review new hire packets within two days of orientation.
- Maintain compliance with human resources policies, procedures, and Federal, State, and local employment laws.
- Ensure compliance with USCIS Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification and conduct periodic I-9 audits.
- Collaborate with HR team members to audit personnel records and HRIS systems quarterly.
- Maintain a positive employee relations environment by ensuring confidentiality, trust, credibility, approachability, fairness, and by interfacing directly with employees and managers.
- Conduct site visits and ensure compliance with regulatory posters.
- Provide backup support as needed to meet business demands.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field.
- At least six (6) years of prior human resources generalist experience.
- Strong knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of relevant employment laws, including labor law, FMLA, NYS PFL, NYC Safe and Sick Leave Act, and ADA.
- Experience in employee relations, administration of benefits and compensation programs, benefits, and leave of absence.
- Ability to use good judgment and discretion in handling confidential information.
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to work independently.
- Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities with strong follow-up skills.
- Excellent project management, time management, and presentation skills.
- High level of experience and comfort working within an HRIS system.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills coupled with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to resolve issues proactively, respectfully, and positively.
- Proficient in MS Office, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
- May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
- Ability to travel throughout various locations in the New York City area.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds several times a week.
