About the Role
The Rate Management Team at Montagu Evans is seeking a Rates Account Officer for their London office. This role will provide essential day-to-day support for business rates administration, client service, billing authority liaison, liability management, and internal reporting. The successful candidate will be crucial in ensuring accurate, timely, and high-quality service delivery to clients.
Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual KPIs, ensuring deadlines, reporting requirements, and agreed service standards are met.
- Process and review business rates and BID demands, ensuring accurate recording of liabilities, reliefs, and billing information.
- Liaise with billing authorities on liabilities, rate-related queries, disputes, and notices.
- Maintain accurate business rates databases, client records, and quality control systems, updating as necessary.
- Assist with funding requests, payment schedules, remittance information, refund tracking, and reconciliation exercises to support accurate client payment management.
- Undertake data cleansing, reconciliation, and reporting exercises using Microsoft Excel, Teams, and internal systems to support accurate client reporting and operational efficiency.
- Provide guidance to junior colleagues on business rates processes, billing authority queries, relief applications, liability issues, and problem resolution.
- Contribute to team training, process improvement, and monthly and quarterly team meetings, sharing knowledge and helping to maintain consistent standards across the team.
- Help identify savings opportunities, compliance risks, process improvements, and value-add services for clients.
- Attend occasional client site visits or meetings as required.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in business rates, local authority revenues, property administration, client accounting, or a related property finance environment is advantageous.
- Understanding of business rates demands, billing authority processes, liability records, reliefs, exemptions, credits, and refunds.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately review financial and property data.
- Confident communicator, able to deal professionally with clients, billing authorities, subcontractors, and internal colleagues.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and maintain accurate records across multiple client instructions.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Teams, and case management systems.
- Ability to identify issues, escalate risks appropriately, and follow matters through to conclusion.
- A proactive, collaborative, and client-focused approach, with a willingness to learn and contribute to the continued development of the Rate Management Team.
- A methodical, responsive, and professional approach is required.
- The successful candidate will be expected to manage operational detail while understanding the wider importance of accurate business rates management, risk control, client service, and commercial delivery within Montagu Evans’ Rating division.
