About the Role

As a Senior Designer on the Data Visualization team, you will translate complex datasets into accessible charts, graphics, and interactive experiences. You will collaborate with journalists, researchers, and testing experts to create engaging and insightful visualizations that help consumers understand risks and make confident decisions. This role offers the opportunity to pitch concepts and explore new visual techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Create visual designs such as charts, graphs, and interactives for digital products, ensuring alignment with UX strategy and user needs.
  • Partner with the content team to understand upcoming stories and develop design approaches.
  • Pitch concepts aligned with brand voice and tone.
  • Analyze, synthesize, and interpret data for translation into visual designs.
  • Use design, imagery, and data to deliver compelling visual storytelling.
  • Explore visual ways of telling stories using various techniques and approaches.
  • Design data visualizations and information graphics with high-fidelity visual designs, typography, color schemes, iconography, and layout, ensuring brand consistency.
  • Prototype and develop interactives in HTML, CSS, and JS.
  • Implement interactive graphics in the content management system.
  • Optimize presentation across platforms for a consistent and engaging experience.
  • Update and refresh graphics as necessary.
  • Stay informed about competitors and industry trends.
  • May perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • A BS degree in design, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of professional design experience for an information-driven digital publication.
  • Ability to translate accessible designs into code that displays well on desktop and mobile environments.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual and graphic design skills, including data visualization and information graphics.
  • Understanding of basic data analysis to interpret raw data, extract key insights, and identify trends.
  • Ability to distill complex information into essential points.
  • Knowledgeable in design fundamentals and storytelling techniques, including color theory, typography, composition, and layout.
  • Skilled collaborator and communicator, partnering well with cross-functional colleagues.
  • Adaptable to feedback and able to incorporate new information or changing project needs while maintaining quality visuals.
  • Experience designing for a consumer-focused organization is a plus.

Salary/Compensations

  • New York Metropolitan Area, California, Chicago, Boston, and Washington, DC $137,819.17K-$145K annually
  • All other CR-approved locations: $130,982.22-$138,000
