About the Role

Pubity is building an original editorial operation focused on original reporting and stories that matter, leveraging its large social audience. The Managing Editor will define the news strategy, launch original news content, establish reporting practices, and build the editorial team, standards, and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the daily news agenda, deciding which stories matter to the audience and where Pubity can add distinctive value.
  • Define Pubity's editorial proposition across news, culture, entertainment, internet trends, and audience-shaping stories.
  • Develop a clear editorial voice and approach to make complex or fast-moving stories accessible and native to younger audiences.
  • Identify emerging stories and conversations early, combining editorial instinct with an understanding of social platform dynamics.
  • Build an original reporting practice, moving beyond aggregation to include finding original angles, interviewing sources, breaking stories, and securing exclusives.
  • Establish sourcing, verification, attribution, fact-checking, corrections, and editorial standards for a global news operation.
  • Build a network of reporters, contributors, experts, and sources for unique story access.
  • Develop repeatable editorial formats and franchises like explainers, interviews, and recurring features.
  • Develop a strategy for converting social reach into a meaningful owned audience and direct reader relationships.
  • Launch Pubity's first flagship newsletter and/or web proposition, owning its editorial purpose, format, voice, cadence, and execution.
  • Build a newsletter that readers actively choose to read.
  • Use newsletter learnings to identify other editorial products and opportunities beyond social.
  • Build, manage, and develop the editorial team, including line management of key hires.
  • Set a high editorial bar while fostering an environment for rapid progress, smart risks, and development.
  • Establish clear workflows for commissioning, editing, publishing, and reacting to breaking news across time zones.
  • Make the case for team structure and hiring as the function grows, securing the right editorial talent.
  • Work closely with social teams to ensure original journalism functions natively on platforms like Instagram without sacrificing quality.
  • Utilize audience and performance data to refine coverage and inform resource allocation.
  • Partner across Video, Creative, Data & Measurement, Product, and Commercial teams.
  • Help define the role of original journalism within the wider Pubity ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Experience in journalism or digital media with a track record as a senior editor, managing editor, deputy editor, or equivalent.
  • Prior management experience.
  • Exceptional news judgment and a track record of identifying resonant stories, angles, and conversations for large audiences.
  • Direct experience commissioning and editing original reporting, including working with reporters, contributors, and sources.
  • Experience building or materially developing an editorial product, vertical, desk, or team.
  • Direct experience managing and developing editorial talent, including hiring, feedback, and accountability.
  • Strong knowledge of journalistic standards, including sourcing, verification, attribution, corrections, and media ethics.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and headline skills, with the ability to make complex stories clear, concise, and compelling.
  • Strong understanding of how news and culture travel across Instagram, TikTok, and the wider social internet.
  • Confidence in reading audience and performance data without letting it override editorial judgment.
  • Ability to operate at both strategic and hands-on levels, from setting long-term strategy to making immediate editorial decisions.
  • Willingness to change course based on audience, reporting, or data.
  • Comfortable balancing people leadership, hands-on editing, and building a new function.
  • Ability to manage diverse tasks, from breaking news to long-term planning.
  • Experience at a social-first or digital-native news, media, or culture brand (nice to have).
  • Experience launching or growing a successful newsletter or other owned editorial product (nice to have).
  • Track record of building a new editorial desk, vertical, publication, or newsroom function from the ground up (nice to have).
  • Existing relationships with journalists, contributors, creators, and sources in the UK and/or US (nice to have).
  • Experience working across US and UK news cycles or for a global publication (nice to have).
