About the Role

The Syracuse City School District is seeking dedicated educators to partner in transforming the district and ensuring all students graduate high school college and career ready. This role is integral to the total educational program, providing proactive leadership to engage stakeholders in delivering programs and services that support academic achievement and prepare students for the future.

Responsibilities

• Establish and develop the school counseling program, including activities and resources for implementation and evaluation.
• Provide academic skills support.
• Teach organizational, study, and test-taking skills.
• Educate students on understanding self and others.
• Provide coping strategies.
• Facilitate peer relationships and effective social skills.
• Develop communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.
• Provide career awareness, exploration, and planning.
• Deliver substance abuse education.
• Promote multicultural/diversity awareness.
• Interpret test results and other student data for goal-setting and decision-making.
• Assist teachers with student educational placement using appropriate assessment strategies.
• Facilitate academic planning.
• Develop, review, and revise career and educational plans for each student.
• Monitor and advise students and parents on progress toward promotion and graduation.
• Prepare students for transitions between educational levels.
• Facilitate postsecondary planning.
• Support students in understanding themselves, including strengths and weaknesses.
• Provide transition planning support.
• Offer individual and small group counseling services to meet developmental, preventive, and remedial needs.
• Consult with students, parents, teachers, and school/community personnel to assist in meeting student needs.
• Make appropriate referrals to outside agencies and specialists when necessary.
• Provide individual/family/school crisis intervention.
• Facilitate peer mediation programs.
• Provide consultation and collaboration services.
• Make referrals to community agencies.
• Adhere to ethical standards of the counseling profession and comply with relevant laws, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in professional associations and upgrade professional knowledge and skills.
• Coordinate all counseling services for students.
• Assist with the coordination and implementation of student services within the school.
• Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals to enhance student education.
• Communicate the role of the school counselor to administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students.
• Participate in a variety of activities that contribute to school effectiveness.
• Participate in school decision-making processes.

Requirements

• New York State teacher certification (or eligibility by start date).
• Out-of-state licensed teachers may qualify through reciprocity.
• Strong record of reliability and professionalism.
• Proven ability to accelerate student learning and use data to inform instruction.
• Demonstrated skill in creating an inclusive, well-managed classroom environment.
• Commitment to culturally responsive teaching and continuous professional growth.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and community partners.
• Strong communication skills and adaptability to meet diverse student needs.
• Employment contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based background check.

• $59,499-$102,037 for the 2026-2027 school year
• $53,000 for any non-certified long-term substitute
• $45.00 per hour for Summer School Programs
