About the Role

We are hiring our first dedicated Engineering Manager to lead the product engineering team for Watcher, a coding agent security product. This is a player-coach role where you will manage and coordinate, while also shipping code. As the team grows, you will transition to a full leadership role. You will have significant influence in shaping the team, processes, and product, reporting directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Own the team's planning and tracking, turning goals into well-scoped tickets with clear owners.
  • Run the operating rhythm, including planning, standups, and retrospectives.
  • Track dependencies between product engineering, monitoring research, and infrastructure/security work, proactively resolving conflicts.
  • Translate research outputs into scoped, prioritized engineering work.
  • Track customer commitments and coordinate releases, testing, documentation, and customer communication.
  • Surface risks and slippage early, providing accurate status updates to the CEO.
  • Directly manage product engineers, including running 1on1s, providing feedback, and owning their growth and performance.
  • Own performance management end-to-end, setting expectations and addressing underperformance.
  • Drive hiring for the team, including pipeline management, interviews, and onboarding.
  • Protect the team's focus by shielding engineers from thrash and ensuring stable priorities.
  • Ship code yourself, including features, bug fixes, internal tooling, and prototypes, primarily in Python and TypeScript.
  • Set the technical bar, make architecture decisions, review code, and establish processes for releases and incidents.
  • Build tooling to increase team speed, including AI-assisted tools for management and engineering tasks.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of software engineering experience before managing, with continued production code shipping.
  • Direct people management experience (hiring, onboarding, managing small teams, 1on1s, feedback, performance) or equivalent tech lead experience for at least 2 years.
  • Experience running delivery for multi-person engineering efforts, accountable for outcomes.
  • High agency, proactively identifying and addressing team needs.
  • Direct communication style, comfortable giving and receiving blunt feedback.
  • Excited about a fast-moving startup environment with comfort in ambiguity and changing priorities.
  • Comfortable leveraging AI heavily for management, coordination, and coding work, with experience using tools like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
  • Experience coordinating between research and engineering, or shipping products with an ML/research component.
  • Customer-facing delivery experience, such as enterprise integrations or deployment projects.
