About the Role
Smiths Detection is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer (L2) to join our Sydney Airport team. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced technician or engineer who enjoys troubleshooting complex equipment, solving technical challenges, and working directly with customers in a highly operational environment. As part of our field service team, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, servicing, and installing advanced X-ray and trace detection systems that support critical aviation and security operations. Working as part of a 24/7 rotating roster, you will play a key role in maximising equipment uptime, ensuring service excellence, and delivering a high standard of customer support. This role requires a strong mechanical, electrical, and electronics fault-finding capability, a proactive approach to learning and knowledge sharing, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a close-knit team.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, service, maintain and repair X-ray and trace detection equipment
- Complete preventative maintenance activities in accordance with service contracts and maintenance schedules
- Respond to equipment faults and corrective maintenance requirements within agreed service levels and KPIs
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults using multimeters, laptops, software diagnostics, and testing equipment
- Test equipment components and circuits to identify root causes of failures
- Replace belts, rollers, motors, X-ray generators, and other mechanical or electronic components
- Inspect, clean, vacuum, de-grease, repair, and replace internal machine components
- Install and commission new equipment at customer sites alongside internal teams, subcontractors, and customer stakeholders
- Complete service reports, maintenance records, and field service documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Manage spare parts consumption and inventory transactions within internal systems
- Participate in technical, safety, compliance, and product training programs
- Support customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders through effective communication and problem-solving
- Ensure tools and test equipment are maintained, calibrated, and fit for purpose
- Analyse field service trends and provide recommendations for equipment and process improvements
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence projects
- Provide guidance, training, and support to junior technicians and new team members
- Promote and lead safe work practices while maintaining a strong safety culture
- Participate in regular team meetings, safety briefings, and operational reviews
Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years' experience in a field service, maintenance, engineering, or technical support role
- Strong troubleshooting and fault-finding skills across mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems
- Experience working with industrial equipment, automation systems, security technology, conveyors, machinery, or similar equipment
- Ability to interpret technical information and diagnose equipment issues methodically
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- A current unrestricted or provisional driver's licence
- Ability to obtain and maintain relevant security clearances and industry licences
- Flexibility to work across a 24/7 rotating shift roster
