About the Role

The University of Rochester is seeking a skilled tradesperson to install, test, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of air conditioning, controls, and refrigeration systems. This role involves performing required preventive maintenance and may include guiding and training lower-classified personnel.

Responsibilities

• Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs air conditioning, controls, and refrigeration systems.
• Maintains air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including absorption, centrifugal, and compressor units.
• Performs required preventive maintenance on installed equipment.
• Inspects and examines system components to detect mechanical or electrical failures.
• Disassembles equipment to assess condition and make necessary repairs or replacements.
• Checks and adjusts electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls specific to air conditioning and refrigeration.
• Pumps down and charges units with appropriate refrigerants.
• Performs equipment installation according to engineer outlines, blueprints, and specifications.
• Tests and balances air and chilled/hot water systems.
• Keeps records and makes reports of daily work, service calls, and equipment condition.
• Recommends modifications for system optimization.
• Reviews controls and control systems for proper operation and efficiency.
• Adheres to all University, Departmental, and OSHA safety policies and practices.
• Performs other related duties, including tool maintenance.

Requirements

• High school education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 4-6 years of experience as a building heating, ventilating, cooling, and controls mechanic.
• Ability to read and write the English language.
• Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification required.
