About the Role

Andromeda is seeking an engineer to establish and lead the Mission Autonomy team, responsible for the robot's long-duration decision-making and daily orchestration. This role involves designing and building the Mission Autonomy architecture from scratch, utilizing frontier models and evaluation methods for training and deployment, and collaborating with other teams to integrate behaviors on the robot.

Responsibilities

  • Design the system architecture for Mission Autonomy, shaping the roadmap.
  • Prototype the Mission Autonomy loop in simulation to guide development decisions.
  • Co-design and build simulation capabilities with the simulation engineer.
  • Own technical direction and define contracts for other teams (autonomy, chatbot, perception, audio, platform).
  • Shape action primitives, specifying requirements for underlying layers.
  • Design for degradation, defining safe and legible behavior during system failures.
  • Establish deployment patterns for safe iteration from simulation to robot.
  • Build the evaluation system, defining benchmarking and metrics for mission completion and failure modes.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building autonomous systems.
  • Previous autonomy experience in areas such as self-driving, mobile robotics, warehouse robotics, field robotics, or similar.
  • At least one deployment lifecycle experience from concept through deployment and operations.
  • Experience with ROS 2, Nav2, and simulation tools (Isaac Sim, Gazebo, or MuJoCo).
  • Awareness of safety-critical design principles for robots operating around people.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Python, C++, or Rust.
  • Comfortable working across the stack, from high-level planning to low-level robot interfaces.
  • Practical robotics experience, including hardware bring-up and sensor/actuator debugging.
  • Strong communication and influence skills, especially when working across Australian teams.
  • Able to steer system design, define interfaces and contracts, and write initial code.
