About the Role
Manage a small engineering design team performing investigation, analysis, and design for mechanical/HVAC systems in existing buildings and for ground-up multifamily and mixed-use construction. Deliver practical designs that meet site constraints, sustainability targets, budget, and constructability requirements. Review project work, including calculations, design, construction administration, and inspections.
Responsibilities
- Manage technical and administrative aspects of mechanical and HVAC design service opportunities from proposal preparation to final acceptance by Client, including invoice and accounts/receivable.
- Review assessment information gathered during site investigations and comment on technical reports, ensuring clarity and applicability for the Client.
- Lead mechanical engineering design for projects including multifamily, commercial, industrial, and retail, with applications in waterside/airside distribution, equipment sizing, smoke control systems, steam distribution systems, and major equipment replacement projects in existing buildings, and minor ground-up construction.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, plumbing, structural, fire/life safety, and project management.
- Supervise staff designers and engineers to produce schematic, filing, and construction designs/layouts adhering to solid-design principles and NYC codes/regulations.
- Prepare drawings, specifications, bidding documents, and related submissions in alignment with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
- Inspect contractor and staff work to ensure adherence to contract documents and prepare summary documentation.
- Communicate effectively with external clients, contractors, vendors, consultants, and city/state construction/energy agencies.
- Maintain project schedules, change orders, and budgets, ensuring adequate staffing and adherence to client agreements.
- Manage individual project budgets and assist the accounting department with invoicing.
- Mentor junior staff members with technical guidance, project processes, feedback, and recognition.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a mechanical or architectural engineering field.
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience designing mechanical and HVAC systems for both existing and new buildings across various project types.
- Experience working within New York City regulatory environments.
- Proficiency in Revit MEP and AutoCAD for mentoring junior engineer drafting tasks.
- Experience with industry-recognized load/energy modeling and distribution calculations for mentoring junior staff.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
- Confident presenter with sound commercial awareness.
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Tri-State Area regulatory experience preferred.
