About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across squads, mentor engineers, and help build resilient, scalable platforms that power Australia's largest bank. Payments is one of the largest and most critical technology domains at CommBank, with platforms moving billions of dollars securely and reliably daily.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across squads, setting engineering direction and raising technical standards.
  • Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms.
  • Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems.
  • Drive modernisation initiatives using cloud-native and event-driven architectures.
  • Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security and operational excellence.
  • Foster a strong DevSecOps culture by owning solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to deployment, production operations and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across teams.
  • Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations to deliver meaningful customer outcomes.
  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices, reusable platform capabilities and modern software delivery techniques where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Experience with Node.js and TypeScript for backend development.
  • Experience building APIs, microservices and distributed applications.
  • Experience designing scalable, high-performance backend systems.
  • Experience with cloud-native engineering and platform technologies such as AWS (including services such as EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3 and CloudWatch).
  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerised applications.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Experience with CI/CD and modern software delivery practices.
  • Experience building observable, resilient production systems.
  • Experience designing and operating modern software platforms including event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
  • Experience with microservices and distributed systems.
  • Experience with API-first design.
  • Experience with scalability, resilience and performance optimisation.
  • Experience leading technical direction across multiple teams or initiatives.
  • Experience in architecture and solution design.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring engineers.
  • Experience driving engineering standards, quality and best practices.
  • Experience taking ownership of software across its full lifecycle with a DevSecOps mindset.
  • Experience collaborating effectively across engineering, product and architecture teams.
  • Experience building high-availability, mission-critical platforms.
  • Experience developing software in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
  • Experience modernising legacy applications and platforms.
  • Experience working with cloud-native and distributed architectures.
  • Experience delivering enterprise-scale software used by millions of customers.
