About the Role

Integrates knowledge, theory, and practice to properly execute procedures in assigned areas of pathology. Maintains competence in routine practices, including specimen handling, preparation, gross examination, and storage. Duties may include specimen receiving, preparation, archiving, retrieval, supply stocking, quality assurance, and assisting with post-mortem examinations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain competence in all routine practices (e.g. specimen handling and preparation, tissue gross examination within limits defined by department procedures, and specimen storage/retrieval/disposal)
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting
  • Receive, prepare, archive, and/or retrieve specimens/material
  • Prepare and/or stock department supplies and reagents
  • Perform quality assurance tasks
  • Assist with post-mortem examinations

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university
  • 24 semester hours of science related courses including 6 semester hours of biology, 6 semester hours of chemistry, and 12 semester hours of other science courses
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and technical competence in specimen collection and preparation, laboratory operations, and quality assurance
  • Ability to organize and prioritize job duties and assigned tasks for completion within expected time-frames
  • Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform job duties and assigned tasks
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and problem solving relevant to assigned duties
  • Ability to compassionately and effectively interact individuals and groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs, and behaviors
  • Ability to appropriately respond to fluctuations in volume, unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or information system failures, shift-to-shift hand-offs, priority test orders, and specimen integrity issues
  • Ability to follow standard practices, processes, and procedures in sequence
  • Knowledge of applicable local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures aimed at ensuring the privacy and safety of patients
