About the Role
The Accountant III performs limited to moderately complex accounting for the Travel Reimbursement unit, assisting travelers with Health and Human Service Commission (HHSC) and Comptroller travel policies. This position processes and audits travel claims, statements, invoices, advances, and settlements for accuracy, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations. It serves as a primary point of contact for the Travel Unit, programs, divisions, and other state agencies, requiring strong communication skills. The role involves researching and resolving discrepancies, validating supporting documentation, and potentially assisting with query and report development.
Responsibilities
- Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule.
- Ensures agency compliance with state requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Reviews, audits, and processes agency payments accurately and in a timely manner.
- Audits payments for processing, ensuring the validity of coding and funding.
- Advises staff and travelers on account codes, travel policies, contract compliance, and agency business processes.
- Communicates complex information verbally and in writing to provide, exchange, or verify information.
- Answers inquiries, addresses issues, and resolves problems or complaints.
- Updates management regarding project status, issues, planning sessions, and conferences.
- Identifies, researches, and resolves accounting transaction problems using an integrated accounting system.
- Works under general supervision with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
- Coordinates and provides technical guidance for agency travel payments.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for travel rules, regulations, and policies.
- Provides complex technical assistance to others.
- Completes projects on time and accurately.
- Performs other duties as assigned to maintain effective operations.
- Cross-trains and backs up other team members.
Requirements
- Experience with accounting.
- Experience in auditing/reviewing accounting financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
- Excellent written communication skills including the use of proper grammar and capitalization.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Skills
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
- Knowledge of accounting systems.
- Ability to review, interpret and apply processes to successfully make payments.
- Ability to effectively communicate, oral and in writing.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
