About the Role
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) works alongside individuals to help them achieve their Personal Outcomes by developing daily living, professional, and decision-making skills, while supporting their overall health and safety. This role requires English proficiency for training, communication with care teams, documentation, and compliance with health and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Works with individuals to help them identify and realize their personal life goals.
- Advocates with individuals in a variety of situations.
- Works with individuals to teach them new life skills.
- Partners with individuals to promote their health and safety.
- Assists individuals to overcome barriers and challenges to establishing and maintaining relationships and social roles.
- Works with individuals and the interdisciplinary team to develop service plans.
- Provides positive behavior support as necessary.
- Prevents, recognizes, and reports abuse toward individuals.
- Accurately documents service provision, daily notes, and other required information.
- Promotes and supports community involvement for individuals.
- Transports clients to locations outside the home using an agency vehicle.
- Performs other healthcare-related tasks as needed.
- Ensures all required documentation is completed and processed appropriately and timely.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Administers bedside or personal care as needed (OPWDD Only).
- Assists with personal care and hygiene as needed.
- Cares for individuals during periods of incapacitation, family disruption, or convalescence.
- Performs housekeeping duties, such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes or dishes, or running errands.
- Plans, shops for, or prepares nutritious meals or assists individuals in planning, shopping for, or preparing meals.
- Supports individuals in achieving employment-related service plan goals through instruction in transferable soft skills.
- Evaluates progress and identifies barriers for each program participant.
- Performs community outreach to identify viable volunteer opportunities.
- Assists with resume development, interview preparation, travel training, hygiene education, and other areas to prepare individuals for competitive employment.
- Communicates with the employment team on behalf of participants.
- Collaborates with families and the interdisciplinary team to ensure person-centered services.
- Communicates in a respectful manner with all people.
- Complies fully with FREE’s confidentiality policies.
- Meets all safety training requirements and adheres to safety policies.
- Meets all job requirements for participating in or delivering training.
- Adheres to FREE’s standard of ethical behavior.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience performing related job duties preferred.
- Valid CPR/FA certification required (provided upon hire as needed).
- Valid SCIP certification required (OPWDD Only – provided upon hire as needed).
- Valid TRUST certification required (OMH Only – must be obtained within 120 days of hire).
- Valid AMAP certification required (OPWDD Only – must be obtained within 120 days of hire if needed).
- Valid G-Tube and Insulin certifications required for specific OPWDD programs (must be obtained within 120 days of hire if needed).
- Functional proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Proficient writing skills with grasp of basic grammar and spelling.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs is essential.
- Must be efficient, well organized, and have excellent communication skills.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Driver’s License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for the agency required.
- Loss of driving privileges may result in change of work location, shift, weekly hours, or termination of employment.
