About the Role
You will own the marketplace surfaces where critical decisions happen, including listing and submission, offers, bidding, auction close, and payouts. Design at Alt is a core discipline that defines problems and requirements, not just executes them. You will be held to a high standard, ensuring that every surface you own ships with a clear problem frame, measurable metrics, and a user experience that delights.
Responsibilities
- Own the problem framing for your surfaces, including identifying user pain points, gathering evidence, and defining success metrics.
- Craft complete solutions that delight users and make the tool feel intuitive.
- Explore and validate multiple design directions, pressure-testing and extending concepts with users.
- Make critical experience decisions regarding the appearance, tone, and interaction of features.
- Write all copy, as copy is considered an integral part of the design process.
- Define and manage trust and confidence levels within the platform's user interface.
- Build a high-quality foundation for your team to iterate on, ensuring fidelity through implementation.
- Instrument and track key metrics before launch, and conduct your own readouts to identify and address misses.
- Conduct weekly customer conversations, mine CX tickets and session replays, and run lightweight tests to gather evidence for your designs.
- Build working prototypes in code to evaluate ideas and settle design arguments efficiently.
Requirements
- Demonstrated curiosity about users, with a proactive approach to gathering research.
- Proven ability to make ambiguity tractable and define problems before solving them.
- Strong articulation skills, capable of aligning teams on problems and defending design trade-offs.
- Experience influencing without authority to drive product decisions and engineer buy-in.
- Experience as a founding, early, or independent designer, with a track record of owning outcomes end-to-end.
- Experience shipping conceived products, not just executing specs, and ability to narrate problem-framing.
- A portfolio organized around problems and outcomes, with quantitative data on impact.
- Proficiency in prototyping with code or code-adjacent tools as a thinking medium.
- Experience using AI tools like Claude, Cursor, Lovable, v0, or Figma Make in your workflow.
- Experience in marketplace or two-sided platforms.
- Experience with high-consideration or financial products where trust is a conversion problem.
- Experience with consumer products with a passionate community.
- Experience as a collector or a strong point of view on the trading card market.
