About the Role

The Custodian will be responsible for performing cleaning duties and operations in Barnard College’s academic buildings, residence halls, and grounds according to established standards and instructions, under the direct supervision of the Facilities Services Custodial Shift Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Clean restrooms including floors, walls, tiles, ceiling, doors, vents, fixtures, and mirrors, and replenish restroom supplies.
• Dispose of trash, and collect, transport, and dispose of all trash and recyclables from assigned areas.
• Clean and maintain walls, floors, doors, frames, and glass surfaces in various campus locations.
• Maintain floors and carpets regularly, including sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing.
• Move and transport custodial supplies, furniture, equipment, materials, boxes, and machine parts as directed.
• Move and arrange furniture, equipment, and supplies for events.
• Perform cleaning and setup of residential hall rooms and suites for the academic year and summer months.
• Coordinate work to ensure all rooms are cleaned and ready for students.
• Shovel snow and apply snow melt to clear walkways, paths, sidewalks, building entrances, and steps during snow events.
• Comply with College rules, Facilities Services policies, and safety regulations.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Requires general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to handling cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
• Must be well-organized and able to prioritize work.
• Must be able to remain calm during stressful conditions.
• Must be able to respect privacy and confidentiality of occupants.
• A pleasant relationship that is supportive of the Facilities Services mission is essential.
• Experience in use of mechanical cleaning equipment is required.
• Ability to read and write English and follow oral and written instructions.
• Able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Requires average physical strength.
• Ability to climb stairs.
