About the Role
This role exists to close the gap in building institutions and technical infrastructure that make the world resilient to advanced AI. It focuses on developing defensive capabilities that are too important to leave to chance and won't be built by startups or fit within academic labs.
Responsibilities
- Create and fully own a growing portfolio of Focused Research Organizations (FROs) and other scientific projects that advance AI resilience.
- Define the portfolio surface area, spanning areas like defensive biosecurity, secure cyber-physical systems, epistemic infrastructure, independent evaluation, compute governance, and economic modeling.
- Form strong theses, find extraordinary founders, pressure-test ideas, raise money, build boards, and launch organizations.
- Help organizations move with the speed and focus of the best deep-tech startups.
- Roadmap the AI resilience landscape to identify bottlenecks and keystone capabilities.
- Source and diligence ideas for new projects and organizations, and design funding calls.
- Build founding teams and recruit early hires.
- Coach founders on technical and organizational roadmaps, fundraising, and startup operations.
- Serve as a Director on multiple FRO boards, tracking milestones and advising on funding, strategy, hiring, firing, and operations.
- Represent Convergent externally, building relationships with philanthropic and public funders.
- Contribute to Convergent-wide initiatives like Founder Retreats and Residencies.
Requirements
- Understand the AI landscape of 2026 in granular detail.
- Have a view on global exposures to AI advancements and tractable solutions.
- Possess ideas or a credible plan for large-scale efforts to improve global AI transition weathering.
- Be able to argue passionately for philanthropic capital allocation theses and their counterarguments.
- Be technically fluent in frontier AI.
- Have a deep network in the field.
- Understand how startups work, with experience in startups, venture firms, or building something.
- Have experience raising money, owning a budget, writing technical roadmaps, and hiring people.
- Have experience assembling a group for a hard technical task that succeeded.
- Have experience with boards, governance, or nonprofit leadership.
- Communicate clearly and move fast.
